Massimo Ricciardi is an Italian nobleman who emigrated to America to try his luck in the music business, but is unfortunately failing and chased by his American ex-fiancee, ready to harm him for revenge. He is thinking of going back to Italy.
He is unaware that the noble family in Rome which he left behind, with two sisters is now sinking in debts. The two sisters are Beatrice, separated, with two daughters and manager of a beauty center, and Mercedes. The two sisters live in the luxury family house: Villa Ricciardi but to pay back the enormous debts they’ve incurred they sign a contract to sell the villa.
Massimo suddenly returns from America but his sisters do not have the courage to own up to the contracted sale. Beatrice’s two daughters, Massimo’s twenty year old nieces now get to know the Uncle and start calling him lo zio d’America, as he seems very American to them. However he has a genial touch, is wild and imaginative and so he gets on with things. However penniless he does bring an element of flair to Beatrice’s beauty center.
Here he meets the enchanting Maria, a beautician who is both sweet and romantic, believing herself in love with an impossible man. Maria asks his help to win over the heart of the man of her dreams, Architect Lorenzo Vanvitelli. Massimo initially convinces himself that he will help her, until he gradually discovers his own love for Maria. At this point he tries every stratagem to change the outcome so that she would fall in love with him rather than win over Lorenzo. As for the Villa Sale contract – his unbeatable verve and imagination provide other ploys to send the sale up in smoke. Once this objective has been achieved Massimo transforms the family home into a money-making location for grand ceremonies and events.
To ultimately win over Maria’s heart Massimo then decides to play the Jealousy card: he goes to visit an old flame in Naples – Magda – and then brings her back to Rome. The ploy works to perfection as Maria discovers her own love for Massimo just as she is about to marry Lorenzo, leaving him at the altar. However, for the two of them to be together, they still have to overcome various obstacles before getting to the wedding they both aspired to.
